A Day in the… Adthena Life

What do you do at Adthena, and what’s your favorite thing about working here?

I am the Financial Controller, and my favorite thing is the variety of work. I like the fact that no two days are the same, and I definitely enjoy working with the other departments. Everyone is friendly and good to work with, and it’s nice getting to know different parts of the business.

What were you doing before you started here?

I studied Economics and Finance at University, and joined Deloitte once I graduated. I worked there for three years during which I qualified as a Chartered Accountant. After Deloitte, I ran away to Mexico. I spent 6 months there traveling and teaching myself to code.

When I got back I started looking for jobs in startups. I think the startup environment and working culture suits me much better, and I was keen to get involved in new kinds of work and take on more responsibility.

How has your role changed since you’ve been here?

I was promoted to Financial Controller in December 2018, just over a year after I joined as a Finance Manager. My role got much broader during this time and I was gradually talking more and more responsibility. I currently manage one Finance Associate, but the team is likely to grow further in the near future.

Tell us about the New Leaders Program…

This is a program for “new leaders” in the business. We have regular workshops with our CEO, Ian. In these sessions we would often discuss how to be more effective at our jobs and managing people; we would use real life case studies and discuss potential solutions to the problems we encounter in managing the team.

We also had group sessions where we would contribute to other areas of the business, such as defining our strategy and core values. It is great to have such an opportunity to contribute to the wider business.

Describe a typical day for you?

There is no typical day! I usually wake up quite early, about 6:30 in the morning. I love going to the gym, having a good workout. After that, I come in to work about 9 am, have a good healthy breakfast, a cup of coffee, check my emails, messages, and decide what the priorities are for the day.

What’s been a highlight of your Adthena career?

I think the highlight was getting promoted. Being the Financial Controller means having quite a lot of responsibility, and it is nice to know the company has confidence in me even though I had only been here for just over a year prior to becoming an FC.

What’s your secret to a good work-life balance?

It is unavoidable in my role that I would occasionally have very busy periods. Being able to prioritise effectively and set expectations for other people is key. Also, it is very important to have time to switch off, and once I leave the office, I no longer check my emails and have my messages snoozed.

Where do you want to be in 5 years?

I do not have a clear picture of what my life is going to be like in 5 years. A lot of people tend to stress out about not having clear goals or a structured career path. I personally do not believe it is necessary to be successful. I enjoy what I do now and I have the ambition to continue improving myself and progressing my career further. What exactly it is going to look like – I will figure out as I go.

How do you survive your morning commute?

I only live 20 minutes walk away from the office, so I enjoy getting a bit of exercise and fresh air into my lungs before work… I would not have it any other way.

What would be on your Come Dine with Me menu?

I am a complete health freak – I mostly eat plant based little processed foods.

I would make courgette spaghetti with truffle and ricotta for a starter, and cauliflower pizza for mains. Probably no desert; Maybe fresh fruit plate or nicecream (blended frozen banana).

What would your primary superpower be?

I would definitely want to be able to able to teleport. To finish work, go to a tropical island and swim in the ocean.
